Traditional, open-ended talk therapy (somtimes referred to as person-centered therapy) is a wonderful and powerful tool for many individuals. However, when it comes to anxiety, simply talking about one’s issues or exploring their origins often does little to reduce their symptoms. Therapists who focus specifically on OCD and anxiety have been trained in specific techniques that have been developed specifically for these disorders and have been proven to be effective through robust scientific research. Think of anxiety as a cough - lots of different conditions can cause it, and just because you have a cough may not mean you have a serious issue that needs treatment. Generally speaking, folks with OCD are anxious because of unwanted, distressing thoughts, and they engage in repeated behaviors called compulsions. For individuals experiencing anxiety that disrupts their life in a significant way but aren’t struggling with compulsions or obsessive thoughts, a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobia, social anxiety, or panic disorder might be a better fit.

As a PLPC, I do not accept insurance. Paying out of pocket for therapy offers some advantages. Insurance-based care requires a mental health diagnosis to be documented in your medical record, and insurance companies (not you or your therapist) determine how many sessions are covered and what kind of treatments they will pay for. Paying privately removes those constraints. Treatment frequency, duration, and approach are determined by your clinical needs rather than your insurer.
